Hija de un sacerdote baptista y de una cantante de gospel vivió con sus padres y sus dos hermanas hasta los seis años en Memphis, que su madre abandona a su familia. Su padre, el reverendo C. L. Franklin, párroco de la New Bethel Baptist Church decide trasladarse a Detroit
Su primer disco lo grabó para Checker a los 14 años, The gospel soul of Aretha Franklin,
Con tan solo quince años, tiene a su primer hijo, y dos años después el segundo. Es madre de cuatro hijos. Dos de ellos, Kecalf, Eddy y Teddy, son personajes relacionados con el mundo de la música.
1960 Se muda a Nueva York para tomar clases de técnica vocal y danza, empezando una carrera que toma forma cuando firma por Columbia. Sin embargo, No fue hasta que firmó con Atlantic Records e hizo pareja con el productor Jerry Wexler que se convirtió en la Reina del Soul.

1998, Aretha se traslada de forma definitiva a Detroit,a formar una discográfica propia. Uno de los principales motivos de esto era el promover las carreras musicales de sus hijos; Kecalf Cunningham, Eddy Richards y Teddy Richards.
